Latha Sivaprasad, MD, FACP, FHM, joined Lifespan as the senior vice president and chief medical officer at Rhode Island Hospital (RIH) and Hasbro Children’s Hospital (HCH) in September 2013. RIH/HCH is a 719- bed organization with annual operating revenue of about $1 Billion and a medical staff of over 1700 physicians. She has oversight of quality and safety, medical staff affairs, credentialing, ambulatory services, and graduate medical education. She is an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.
Sivaprasad, an internist, practiced clinical medicine for five years before she transitioned to the administrative side of health care to focus on patient safety, patient quality and hospital management. In 2008 she was hired as medical director for quality and safety at Beth Israel Medical Center (BIMC) and later promoted to associate chief medical officer and chief patient experience officer.
During her tenure at BIMC, Sivaprasad was a leader in system and hospital-wide programs including anticoagulation safety, blood management, and cost containment. She was instrumental in operationalizing one of the largest inpatient gainsharing programs in the country and participated in the Medicare pilot in 2008. At BIMC she helped lead a team of physician leaders to develop and implement leading-edge surgical initiatives to increase patient safety across the surgical care continuum. She also served as a co-investigator for a multi-center, three-year grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality that focused on surgical safety, disclosure, and claims reduction.
An Ohio native, Sivaprasad received her undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Missouri- Kansas City and completed her residency in internal medicine at Washington University/ Barnes- Jewish Hospital in St. Louis Missouri. In 2008, she completed the Don Hoskins Fellowship for Safety and Quality at BIMC in New York.
Sivaprasad is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the Society of Hospital Medicine. She is a member of a number of professional associations including the American Society of Professionals in Patient Safety, American Medical Association, and Alliance for Continuing Medical Education and Alpha Omega Alpha. She was recognized as one of 25 Healthcare Leaders Under 40 by Becker’s Hospital Review and 40 under 40 by Providence Business News in 2014.
Outside the hospital, Sivaprasad enjoys photography, traveling, and spending time with her family.
